Please help us welcome Pearl Django to Baltimore!
Sunday April 6, 2014
3:00PM Workshop 6:30PM Concert

This is only the second time we've hosted a five piece band. They're still talking about the first one (Frank Vignola's Quintet). This promises to be a truly legendary evening. What do you think, dance floor?

PEARL DJANGO (www.pearldjango.com)

With a performance history spanning almost two decades, Pearl Django endures as one of the most highly regarded Hot Club style groups working today. Although the band’s roots are firmly in the music made famous by Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli, its extensive repertoire includes traditional jazz classics and original compositions. Pearl Django has performed at festivals, dances and nightspots throughout the U.S. and abroad. They have played at the prestigious Festival Django Reinhardt in Samois sur Seine and have been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered.” The band’s signature style is marked by pristine and dexterous string work, colors of Bal Musette, the steady pulse of rhythm guitar and an unmistakable swing that delights audiences of all musical sensibilities. Throughout the years, Pearl Django has cultivated a devoted and enthusiastic following and they continue to play to packed houses wherever they perform.

Voted favorite area jazz band 2003, by Seattle Weekly readers!

"Pearl Django play(s) gypsy jazz…and they do it with such verve, skill and pleasure that they're pretty much irresistible to jazz and non-jazz listeners alike."

—Seattle Weekly

“Pearl Django: The gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt done to perfection!”

—Paul de Barros, The Seattle Times (2002)

Members:

Ryan Hoffman & Troy Chapman, Guitar; Michael Gray, Violin;

David Lange, Accordion; Rick Leppanen, Bass

Background: (very brief)

The group’s inception was as a trio in Tacoma, Washington in 1994.  The focus of Pearl Django was, and is, to incorporate the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli with American swing music. They quickly expanded to a quintet, adding a violinist and a third guitarist.  In 1999, along with the release of their third and fourth CDs, the group incorporated their own record label, Modern Hot Records. At about the same time, MHR signed a national distribution agreement with City Hall Records in San Rafael, California.  The October 2000 release of Avalon put the group on the national map with seven weeks of Gavin top-forty airplay and sales of 15,000 copies.  In May 2001, Pearl Django was featured on All Things Considered.  In June 2002, Pearl Django performed at the prestigious Festival Django Reinhardt in Samois sur Seine, just outside of Paris, France.  As of 2007 Pearl Django is working as both a quartet and a quintet (with accordionist, David Lange) All of the members are contributing original compositions to the band’s expansive repertoire. They have released 11 CDs to date.

“If Paris is the city of love, then Pearl Django’s music is the flirtatious accompaniment.”

—6Moons.com (review of Under Paris Skies)

Performance Highlights:

Tim and Myles Thompson were fantastic in March of 2014!

It’s not surprising that Tim and Myles Thompson’s new album, Time4Me2Go, is filled with complex, masterfully played tracks. Fans of their live shows are frequently dazzled by the often otherworldly, synchronized unity of their music. After all, the father / son duo have been playing together now for, basically, all of Myles’ 19 years.

Time4Me2Go, the duo’s fourth studio release, is keenly focused on the sound the duo delivers live. There are no studio tricks or overdubs needed to display the sharp interplay between the two.

Though predominately written by Tim, a respected award-winning Nashville session guitarist and songwriter, both contribute equally to the direction of the album. “We wanted to do a record that was just one fiddle, one guitar and two voices,” Tim says. “We have similar voices and tastes. We don’t have to think too much to play together. It’s like osmosis.”

See te video below and check out www.timthompsonguitar.com for motivation and inspiration. All seats will go quickly for this one. Reserve now.

Delta Pace in conjunction with the Stretched Strings presents:

Fingerstyle Guitar Champion PETE HUTTLINGER
You saw him play for LeAnn Rimes on "Live From Abbey Road"
You saw him again, playing for Leann on "Dancing With The Stars

"

If you were in NY, you saw him at Carnegie Hall.

Here's you chance to get up close in an intimate venue! Order tickets now. Very limited seating. Hightopps is next to the Maryland Fairgrounds in Timonium, MD. Great food, full bar, intimate setting with a fireplace. Wonderful atmosphere for a night to remember.

“In Pete Huttlinger’s hands, a fingerpicked flat-top becomes a mini-orchestra. He juggles it all: a tune’s melody, harmony, and bass lines—even percussion. His playing is fun, scary, and always inspiring.” Guitar Player Magazine

"Few guitarists achieve the kind of fingerstyle perfection Pete Huttlinger does on this outstanding solo effort. Whether he's flying through the complex changes he's devised for Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm" or gently rhapsodizing on his own "McGuire's Landing" and "Goodbye Chester," he's in total command of his Collings OM1-A. With stunning arrangements of "Sunny" and Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," where he plays the bass line, horn parts and melody simultaneously without breaking a sweat, Huttlinger continues mining the rich vein of Top 40 Covers he began on 2002's Naked Pop. But he's also composed several great tunes, including "Hortensia," "Tommy in the Morning," (written for Tommy Emmanuel), and "Darcy's Guitar," one of the simplest and prettiest melodies in his repertoire. Titled after the "patron saint of impossible dreams" (according to the liner notes), The Santa Rita Connection is a dream to listen to." Jim Ohlschmidt, ACOUSTIC GUITAR MAGAZINE

Opening for Pete is Philly's own Tim Farrell, master guitarist, teacher and founder of the Stretched Strings Concert Series.
